Dettagli

This itinerary starts in Montone, a small medieval village set on a hilltop overlooking the entire Carpina Vally. In the 13th century this small village became a fiefdom of Andrea Fortebracci known as Braccio da Montone, famous military commander and Lord of Perugia. The main square inside the walled town center (where his residence once stood, today the Town Hall), as well as the fortified “Rocca” (now half-destroyed but still of great emotional impact) are dedicated to him. In Montone we can also admire the Gothic church of Saint Francis and the Collegiate Church of Saint Mary and Saint Gregory the Great which houses the relic of Santa Spina. From there we leave for Umbertide town. The surrounding area was inhabited since pre-Roman times. Much remains intact of the ancient “Fratta” (old name of the town), as for example the ancient “Rocca” dating back to the 14th -15th centuries, heart of the historic center. The town of Umbertide has prized art works inside its museums and churches, such as the “Deposition from the Cross” by Renaissance painter Luca Signorelli and the “Madonna and Child in Glory” by late-Renaissance painter Niccolò Circignani (called Pomarancio) both displayed in the Civic Museum. Not far from Umbertide, we see the Abbey of Montecorona immersed in luxuriant nature, in an area full of mysticism and religious faith. The abbey complex was reconstructed in the 17th century; what remains from antique times is the crypt dating back to the late-Roman era, with supporting columns and capitals maintained from ancient Roman times thanks to their reuse in the 12th century building.
